If your garage door has fallen off the tracks your first question is probably, “How can I get this fixed?”
But before you call for a repair, let’s stop to think what caused the door to come off the tracks in the first place. This is helpful because if you can pinpoint the cause of a problem, then you may be able to prevent the problem from happening again.
Here are a few reasons your garage door may have fallen off the tracks:
The door is bent
It’s more common than you may think for drivers to hit their garage doors with their cars. Sometimes they back into the door while exiting the garage and sometimes they run into it during entry. Either way, the result is the same. The impact from such a collision bends the door and prevents it from properly riding the track. Eventually, the bent door falls off the track.
The tracks are weak
If the horizontal tracks that your garage door rides can’t handle the weight of the door, then they will easily bend at the slightest amount of impact. Garage doors are heavy, ranging from 130 pounds to more than 400! The heavier the door is, the stronger your tracks should be. 14-gauge steel reinforced with iron rods is the best option.
The rollers wore out
Garage doors have several rollers that glide along the tracks, allowing the door to smoothly open and close. If just one or two of these rollers wear out, the door will eventually fall off the track. Rollers come in a variety of sizes, but it’s recommended to get rollers with at least 10 ball bearings.
The lift cable came off or broke
Lift cables are located on either side of a garage door. If for any reason the door loses alignment, the cable will come off or break. Cables are more likely to come off than they are to break. The cable may come off the counter balance system if items such as rakes, shovels and brooms are keeping the door from closing. Cables may also come off the track if the door isn’t properly balanced.
Because your garage door is the largest moving object in your home, we recommend preventative maintenance annually. This can save you from expensive repairs or a replacement down the road.
