Nothing’s quite as frustrating as having a garage door and opener that just won’t work. If you wake up to find a jammed door, there are a number of things you can try to get it unstuck. Here are some things to try as you troubleshoot a jammed garage door.

Check for an Obstruction
Visually inspect the track and see if something is wedged in it to obstruct it. If something you’re storing in your garage fell on the track while the door was opening, it could get stuck in the track. Removing the item will fix your jam and get you out the door again

Broken Spring
Next, if you don’t find an obstruction, check the springs. If your door has torsion springs, which are horizontal at the top of the door, you can tell they are broken by checking for a gap between the two springs. If your door has extension springs, you can check by looking to see if they are hanging on the side of the door. If you have a broken spring, you’ll need to call a pro to replace it as this is a dangerous task.

See if the Door is Locked
Some garage doors can go into “full lock” mode, which means they can’t be opened at all. This is simple to do and requires just turning the outdoor handle. Sometimes curious children who are playing in the driveway will do this. To fix, just unlock the door and be on your way.

Check the Track
Next, check the track to see if its bent. If you find a place where it’s bent, try gently bending it back. If you can’t do this yourself, you’ll need a pro to handle the task.

See if the Rollers are Off the Track
Finally, if those aren’t the cause of your jammed door, you may have rollers that slipped off the track. If they are off track, but the panels themselves are in good repair, they can simply be put back. Call a professional for this service.
