“Sometimes a simple problem on a garage door can be hard to figure out. If your garage door is only going down when you hold down your remote button, chances are your photoeye sensors are out of alignment. Here is a way to diagnose and fix your safety sensor alignment”
Locate Your Safety Sensor The first thing you need to do is locate your garage door’s photoeye or safety sensor. The sensor is little black box or cylinder located about 6 inches off the ground and mounted to the track. The way the sensor works is by sending an infra-red signal to the motor as soon as the remote button is pushed. Check for Obstruction Once you have located the safety senor the first thing you will want to do is see if something is blocking the signal which is being transmitted from one sensor to the other. Often, the sensor may be blocked by the bracket which is holding it. Moving the Sensor To fix the problem you are going to want to loosen the nut tightening the bracket holding the sensor. Once you have loosened the nut begin moving the sensor minimally so the two sensors become aligned. You will know you have achieved this when the light on the safety sensor turns green meaning you have successfully reconnected the circuit. Final Option If the sensors are aligned and you can’t seem to locate the obstruction chances are the problem is bigger than the sensor. Call a professional for this service.
